The Bay of Naples once reached Via Santa

The hotel is situated at 150 m. on the
sea on the hill that Carlo III
of Borbone chose to Build the splendid “Reggia of Capodimonte” XVIII
century (rich in the most precious works of art), situated in the
luxuriant homonymous botanical park center of the “Royal China Factory”
near The Astronomical Observatory XIX century (Museum of rare
astronomical instruments). Next to the Hotel stands out the outline of
the “ Torre Palasciano”, XIX century, residence of the illustrious
physician-scientist, inventor of the red cross, who constructed it
drawing his inspiration from the “Palazzo della Signoria” in Florence.
The King of Naples, Carlo of Borbone, who
wanted many famous monuments
for his city, had the idea of the construction of a “hunting casino” on
the hill of Capodimonte. Attracted by the approximately seven
chilometres of secular forest, he committed the plain to Carasale, who
was than warking for the Teatro S. Carlo, giving the direction of the
works to Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Antonio Canevari. The first stone
was placed in 1738, but the construcion lasted about twenty years owing
to the great difficulty caused by the transport of the piperno marble
from the cave of Pianura.
Finally, in 1758 the wanderfull Farnese
collections, inherited by Carlo
through his mother, where arranged in the wide building with the
immense courtyards.
Ferdinando IV, Carlo’s successor,
entrusted to the architet Ferdinando
Fuga the widening of the Reggia and the care of the park. With the
tranfer of all the collections of art to the Palace of the Studies, now
National Archaeological Museum, during the French decade (1806-1815)
the Reggia becomes the residence of Giuseppe Bonaparte and Gioacchino
Murat. The residential function is confirmed by Ferdinando, returned
from the Sicilian exile in 1815, who undertakes new works in the palace
and the park. A lot of painters, sculptors and craftsmen are called to
decorate the rooms of the Reggia, particularly the “ salone delle
feste” and at about the middle of the century, the palace is finally
complited.
After the Unit of Italy, Capodimonte
passes to the Savoia, who, thanks
to the action of Annibale Sacco, promote the enrichment of the
collections of art by the transfer of furnishings and objects from the
Royal abolished Bourbon sites, amoung which the famous Maria Amalia of
Sassonia’s boudoir from Portici or the monumental marble floor of Roman
age from the Favorita of Resina. At the same time a gallery of modern
art was started by buying neapolitan comporary paintings. After Sacco’s
death the attempt to fuse the two souls of Capodimonte as residence and
museum, actually fails. The palace becomes the Dukes of Aosta’s
residence. In 1920 it passes from the civil list to the public domain,
but only in 1950, with the approval of the “Ministero della Pubblica
Istruzione” it becomes a museum, again. So medieval and modern art
collections returned to Capodimonte from the National Museum, putting
into effect the Bruno Molaioli plan.
