1791 it was a single large house and in use as a residence for

the house, demolished it
and built two replacements to be known as 22 and 23 St Stephens
Green. In later years the Ancient and Most Benevolent Order of the
Friendly Brothers of St Patrick purchased the house. On St.
Patricks day in 1886, the first meeting took place in what was
to be a long relationship between the brothers and the house.
Today, the nameplates on the door of each
room at Brownes
serve to remind us of No, 22s previous and often illustrious
occupants. Guests have included Samuel Beckett who, it is said,
spent time writing in one of the buildings fine rooms. Brownes
is one of the few complete examples that remain, of Dublins
once-rich Georgian heritage. It is unique in that the original
frontage, complete with restored balcony and canopy still overlook
St Stephens Green, making it a favourite among the citys Georgian
aficionados. The late 18th century plasterwork in the main rooms
and on the staircase also remains intact.
